When you release a finished product outside, it can often feel as though you no longer have control over it; whether or not it makes it to its intended location depends on planning and good fortune. The paths that any piece of freight could take through the worldwide supply chain can occasionally appear too chaotic to optimize, even if you’re a shipper or a freight forwarder.

Although there are valid reasons for feeling this way, there is also cause for optimism in the Logistics 4.0 era. Logistics planners now have more opportunities to cut costs and improve their shipping flows thanks to the new sophistication that digital shipping is bringing to route planning procedures. We’ve put up a few suggestions for supply chain managers to employ in order to optimize the routes that their products take to reach their final locations by 05+ ways to optimize the shipping routes

Seize The Change

There are those who would have you believe that the best strategy is the one that is created the farthest in advance; that is, that by choosing your favorite route early, you can lock in the best price and spare yourself the confusion of arranging at the last minute. Securing the best possible pricing with your various supply chain partners is a concern, but the requirement to maintain flexibility may outweigh it (and is frequently compatible with it). By relying on static, well-established shipping routes, you simultaneously expose yourself to disruptions and cut yourself off from fresh sources of value as the conditions of the global supply chain change rapidly.

You must keep up with the modern logistics

Waiting until all the pertinent information is available will allow you to take advantage of backhauls you may not have known about or may allow you to bundle shipments in a more cost-effective way. This is preferable than choosing a route in advance and hope that conditions remain the same. It can be challenging to strike the right balance when it comes to really securing your route, but the potential benefit is greater flexibility.

Identify and Foresee Customer Demand

Another suggestion that is occasionally made to logistics planners is that by increasing their lead times, they would be able to carry out route planning tasks more successfully. If it were possible, this would almost probably be successful because greater time can result in better planning. However, as customer demands for shipping turnaround times increase, how many businesses can guarantee typical two- to three-day shipping for consumer orders while also lengthening lead times? Assuming it isn’t a large number, planners will need to search elsewhere for the advantages of all that extra time.

To illustrate, supply chain managers can give themselves a lot more flexibility to make the most appropriate choices if they can improve at anticipating the needs of their consumers. In-depth customer data collection and analysis would probably be necessary for this, but with advanced analytics, you can turn any available data into accurate demand estimates. From there, you can create longer-term plans to which you can make minor changes as operational alterations take place.

Utilize Mode Shifts

Multimodal transportation, which involves switching between modes of transportation throughout a shipment and possibly repackaging your cargo, is not a recent idea. In actuality, it dates back to the beginning of shipping. Although it’s simple to dismiss it as an inconvenience (“wouldn’t it be preferable to be able to stick with just air freight or just a container ship for the entire route?” you might question), it’s increasingly presenting itself to perceptive supply chain managers as a method to create value. How? In order to maximize efficiency, by giving logistics planners the option to re-bundle their shipments after the fact.

Many business are finding ways To Optimize The Shipping Routes

For instance, if you’re sending out a few less-than-full truckloads (LTLs) due to the specific constraints placed on your various warehouses and timetables, but they’re all planned to coincide, you can use multimodal shipping as an excuse to convert your LTLs into an FTL before they reach their final destination, saving on labor and fuel costs. You must be able to recognize and seize these chances as they present themselves, which calls for a high level of visibility into your operations.

Follow in Actual Time

Each component of your transport network should be integrated in a Logistics 4.0 environment, which calls for every truck, shipping container, and pallet to be in contact with both your central logistics control tower and one another. This should open the door for real-time monitoring of your transport logistics in addition to all the other ways it can assist you in streamlining your logistical procedures. How can this help with optimization? For one thing, it helps logistics planners implement the aforementioned suggestions.

Beyond that, though, real-time can be one of the most crucial instruments in the supply chain manager’s toolbox when it comes to preventing disruptions and breakdowns. In the end, if you can keep an eye on every development as it happens, you’ll be far more likely to spot warning indications beforehand and take action to reduce the likelihood of, instance, a delayed shipment owing to bad traffic and weather, or a missed chance for cargo consolidation.

Integrate with Shipping Partners

The majority of our discussion so far has focused on behaviors and attitudes you may adopt within your own company, but managing relationships with customers, partners, forwarders, and suppliers will make up a large portion of the effort involved in logistics improvements. Here, it’s important to make sure that you’re placing reservations for all of the capacity you require at the appropriate rates, as well as making sure that you’re appropriately creating timelines and catering to consumer needs.

In the Logistics 4.0 era, how can you accomplish that the best? Achieving genuine E2E (end-to-end) visibility requires that your IT systems are connected with those of your partners. By doing so, you can contribute to lowering the probability of operational miscommunications within a company and gaining greater understanding of the overall logistics system, which will open up more options for optimization

The idea of logistics in the fourth industrial revolution, commonly known as “logistics 4.0,” was unclear a few years ago but is progressively becoming more acknowledged now. The logistics service system is actively being penetrated by technology, both as solutions and service providers. However, the number of domestic logistics companies who are interested in making investments and implementing new technology in logistics in their operations is still modest, which has an impact on both competition and operational effectiveness.

How does technology support the logistics

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic led to the formation of a digitally connected marketplace. This motivates retailers, e-commerce platforms, and delivery service providers to continually develop in order to fulfill the evolving expectations of customers. To address this issue, numerous businesses in the logistics sector have implemented breakthrough technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), automation, big data, and the internet of things. These technologies have allowed them to scale up, offer safe, satisfying services while reducing costs, or even find new sources of income.

Particularly, enterprises may reduce delivery costs, enhance resource utilization, and ensure fast decision-making thanks to solutions for managing logistics operations that are powered by automation and artificial intelligence. Additionally, AI-powered route planning systems can take into account parameters like cost, fuel consumption, third-party logistics (3PL), performance, volume order number, delivery type and kind, distance… to establish a delivery route that is both efficient and affordable. This lowers operating expenses and raises profit upon every order.

4.0 Logistics

Businesses may benefit from a 14% decrease in last-mile delivery costs and a 13% increase in the amount of goods delivered per transportation when technology is used in logistics operations. Additionally, by using intelligent route planning, these revolutionary technologies allow logistics companies and service providers to further optimize costs and boost delivery productivity.

Difficulties in applying technology in logistics

Looking for a good technical solution

Vietnamese enterprises find it challenging to choose the most suitable supplier since there are so few companies offering logistics technology solutions.

As a result of the high cost of major software obtained from abroad—typically not less than $100,000 USD—many businesses that offer forwarding services still do not have international freight forwarding management software (FMS). However, there are vendors selling FMS software that was created in our nation for about $1,000, but clients are concerned about its stability and dearth of features. This makes it difficult for both foreign and domestic suppliers to survive because either way they will not have enough sales to develop in the current market.

Capital and effective investment requirements for technology in logistics

A quality technological solution is a requirement, but organizations frequently need to determine whether their technology investment will yield a profit. The second and toughest challenge to overcome is this payback period — for example, the payback time. Enterprises have been searching for answers for a while now, but more than a year later, they are still at a loss for what to do because the economic goals have not been met.

Bank loans and internal resources are still frequently used to finance equipment acquisitions, but these options come with fees, and the needed payback period for technology investments is no longer than three years. Due to a lack of precedent and experience, it is difficult for domestic businesses to make investment decisions whether productivity will boost or other benefits would result from the use of technology.

Personnel for management, operation, and maintenance

Choosing a solution is complicated since many businesses have a team of administrators and leaders that are unable to keep up with new knowledge and information about technological applications . Moreover, maintenance staff lacks the necessary training and suppliers frequently struggle to provide the efficient online maintenance and troubleshooting help.

Automation and Artificial Intelligence

Inadequate managers and consultants for technology application

Domestic businesses do not typically invest in consulting or project management of technological applications, so the project management consulting market for logistics is still generally modest and rudimentary.

Proposals to enhance the application of technology in logistics

Create targeted initiatives to increase the capability of logistics service providers through the application of technology with specified performance indicators, such as speed, accuracy, quality, and service level.

Support activities for applied research, training, and technology in logistics transfer to develop skills in applied automation system design, system integration, installation, and maintenance for transportation and warehouse management.

Support financial resources or initial operating circumstances for businesses developing logistics e-platform solutions and similar applications.

To benefit from technology resources and the region’s expanding connections, investigate and put into practice existing solutions created by international and regional partners.

Every industry is becoming more and more interested in blockchain. Not because of that resonance, Supply Chain also integrates with Blockchain technology to improve transparency and traceability while drastically lowering costs. Blockchain in logistics is the answer that will bring about clear improvements to help businesses become more competitive and operate more effectively.

Learn about Blockchain

A decentralized database is what blockchain is first known as, and it serves as a means of storing data in blocks that are connected by encryption. This method for secure data transmission has evolved over time. Blockchain technology is built to withstand data change which has unique features for data transfer. The information may be verified without an intermediate. There are numerous nodes in this system that can independently check information.

In the Blockchain, data cannot be altered. They are only included once all system nodes have agreed to include them. If a portion of the Blockchain system fails, there will be a problem. Then, for complete information protection, other computers and nodes will continue to operate.

Blockchain promotes the development of the Logistics

With smart features, Blockchain application in the Logistics industry is indispensable. This is the technology that helps to stir up the logistics industry, not only the world. And in Vietnam, Blockchain also best meets the needs of the industry.

Blockchain – a breakthrough in Logistics and Supply Chain

Blockchain technology facilitates the acceleration of the transportation process in logistics. Thanks to autonomous operation and management, you can save a considerable amount of money and time. To manage the shipping process without errors, blockchain is entirely compatible with transportation management software. Manage product conditions like temperature, usage duration, and condition… Blockchain also contributes to limiting the costs incurred such as wharfs. The archives are public, transparent and clear.

Outstanding advantages of blockchain in logistics and supply chain

Currently, the logistics sector has a lot of shortcomings. Examples include expensive costs, challenging management, and transportation. In addition, tracking the status of products is incredibly complicated and fraud prone. Therefore, the use of blockchain in the logistics sector will adequately address these shortcomings.

Increase competitiveness with other businesses

Vietnamese transportation firms have not optimized their operations. The need for an intermediary stage in the transaction is what causes the high cost. To update and store information about ships that have entered the port, the devices will use internal software. Then, apply internal software or the portal of the appropriate authorities to proactively examine the vessel’s records and paperwork as well as the credentials of the crew members on board.

This process is carried out right away after receiving the online declaration through the Portal in order to provide a basis for managing the processes for vessels to enter and depart the port.

Application of IT in Enterprises

Currently, although IT Application In Logistics has become popular, not many domestic enterprises have applied this. However, companies constantly strive to gradually implement contemporary information technology in their operations. The four sectors now using the most advanced information technology are as follows:

Applications in road transportation include companies like Grab, Be, Gojek, etc.

Express delivery, last-mile delivery, and e-commerce warehouse automation: like Lazada, Shopee, Sendo, Tiki, etc. are among these.

Operating system and production automation: A few major manufacturing firms have used this technology to implement lean production, utilizing robots in the manufacturing and sales processes.

Artificial intelligence, automation, and information systems combined: Companies will use this technology to manage their supply chains from the sourcing of raw materials to the delivery of products to the customer.

Logistics service outsourcing is no longer a novel idea for commercial organizations. Supply chains, especially logistics activities, must increase productivity and efficiency in their operational procedures to keep up with the ongoing development of e-commerce and the rise in customer demand to fulfill the current needs. To ensure the effectiveness and seamlessness of their supply chain for products as well as to reduce costs, businesses need to have a strong understanding of the models of logistics services.

About Logistics

Logistics is the planning, organizing, implementing, and managing the flow and storage of goods, services, and related information from the point of origin to the point of final destination in a way that is efficient and effective in compliance with customer requirements. Logistics is the process of getting the right goods to t

According to the “5 rights” point of view: Logistics is the process of providing the right product to the right place, at the right time with the right conditions and at the right cost for the customer to consume the product (Right items, right place, right time, right condition, right cost)

05 models of Logistics services

1PL (First Party Logistics or Self-sufficient Logistics)

This is a form of service where the owners of goods themselves organize and perform logistics activities to meet their own needs. These businesses might have their own facilities, plants, loading and unloading machinery, as well as other resources, such as personnel, needed to carry out logistical tasks.

1PL are used for small, straightforward commodities with a limited range of transportation, primarily domestically. In some instances, a very large corporation may be able to plan and manage logistical operations on its own. The 1PL form, however, will present numerous challenges, impair efficiency, and easily pose numerous risks and expenses for organizations lacking sufficient experience, qualifications, and human resources.

Self-sufficient Logistics can be risky and time-consuming

2PL (Second Party Logistics)

This is a chain of service providers for a single operation for a chain of logistical operations to meet shippers’ needs, but it has not been integrated with logistics activities (only taking on one stage in the logistics chain). The handling of conventional tasks including shipping, logistics, customs clearance, payment, etc. is known as 2PL.

2PL typically only handles and contributes to a small portion of the logistics chain for its clients, which are typically shipping lines or transportation companies that operate on air or by road.

3PL (Third Party Logistics)

It is possible to define 3PL as the development of a more advanced and comprehensive level of 2PL. The term “3PL” refers to the practice of contracting with external firms to handle certain logistics-related tasks, which may include the whole logistics management process or just a few specific tasks.

According to the terms of the contract, the logistics service provider will carry out the following tasks for the customer company to ensure that the goods arrive at the designated location: customs declaration, customs clearance, delivery documents, transportation, loading and unloading, etc. In order to best satisfy customer needs and enhance the company’s service function, 3PL businesses usually operate a variety of transportation vehicles, including both air and road transportation. Besides, they also maintain close partnerships with other shipping companies.

3PL: Third parties that provide specific, outsourced logistics services

4PL (Fourth Party Logistics)

As a company that plays the function of merging, 4PL Logistics Company connects its potential resources and technical facilities with other businesses in order to build, develop, and manage complete logistics chain solutions.

4PL is based on 3PL but incorporates larger and far more responsible duties, namely management of business processes and information technology services. For the purpose of reaching the worldwide market, 4PL is considered to be a single point of contact where management, resource aggregation, and 3PL function oversight are carried out. The 4PL model has an impact on the entire customer supply chain in addition to the logistics system.

4PL service providers are joint-ventures with long-term collaboration agreements and a long-term strategic outlook. These businesses serve as a link between customers and suppliers, distributors, and customers, assisting in the development of the supply chain in line with the client company’s shared goal.

Since 4PL was built on the 3PL platform, it specifically undertakes and manages all 3PL functions and collaborates with the management of one or more other 3PL companies to deliver all available logistics services. We can notice that 4PL has a more distinct feature than 3PL, which is core value, strategic, and has an enduring effect on all operations in the company’s supply chain. Unlike 3PL, 4PL does not merely seek to reduce costs.

Therefore, 4PLs are known as Leading Logistics Providers.

5PL (Fifth Party Logistics Service Provider)

Since the 5PL service was just recently launched on the e-commerce platform, it’s possible that few of you are aware of it. A sort of e-commerce market service known as 5PL handles all parties in the distribution chain on an e-commerce platform, including 3PLs and 4PLs. Systems, such as the Order Management System (OMS), Warehouse Management System (WMS), and Transportation Management System (TMS), are crucial to the success of any logistics service provider.

E-commerce platform logistics

Transporting goods by container is very different from other methods such as sea freight, air freight, or road shipping. If you are looking for a way to transport your goods, you need to learn about this shipping method. What types of goods are transported by container? What are the characteristics of each type? What are the advantages of container shipping and when should it be used? Let’s find out with Infinite about this shipping method.

What is Container Shipping

Container shipping is divided into 4 main modes: Full Container Load (FCL), Less than Container Load (LCL) and combined freight (FCL/LCL or LCL/FCL).

FCL/FCL: Full-container shipping means that the customer (or the owner) hires an entire container to carry the goods. The carrier receives the whole container from the shipper at the container yard (CY) where it is received and will deliver the whole container to the consignee at the destination CY. When the items are identical and enough to pack 1 container, this is the most economical option.

LCL/LCL: is the carrier who receives odd shipments from the sender at container freight station (CFS), packed into one or more containers, transported to CFS at destination and delivered to multiple consignees.

-> Consolidator will compile the erratic shipments from various owners, arrange, classify, and combine them to pack them into containers, seal the lead in accordance with export regulations, and handle customs procedures. They will also load the container to the departing vessel, unload the container at the destination, and deliver it to the consignee.

FCL/LCL or LCL/FCL: a combination of the two methods above.

Container shipping has 4 main ways: FCL/FCL, LCL/LCL, FCL/LCL and LCL/FCL

Pros and Cons of Transporting goods by container

Advantages of Container Shipping

Customers are increasingly choosing to ship their goods in containers since it provides so many fantastic benefits, including:

Flexibility

Freight schedule: A few ports in Africa and Central America, as well as some of the world’s busiest ports including Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Hamburg, New York, and Los Angeles, are exceptions. The other ships all have weekly ship schedules that include stops at Vietnamese ports.

Quantity of the goods: LCL shipping of retail goods is also achievable with just a few tens of kilograms. It is more practical if you have enough commodities to fill one or more containers. If you have enough commodites to fill one or more containers, it is more practical. The shipment also needs to be at least a few thousand tons in weight if the ship is carrying bulk cargo.

High safety

Strong steel is used in the design of the containers to provide maximum protection for the cargo. The container has only one door and four sealed corners, which the transport operator will cover when the items are being transported to prevent contamination, theft, and damage from the effects of the external environment.

Cost saving

The transportation of goods by container compared to other modes of transportation such as air, rail, and road has cheaper freight rates. Reduce shipper’s claims for damage to goods as well as reduce cargo handling costs. Due to the container’s high level of security as a way to store cargo, utilizing the entire container also enables the shipper to save money on some additional expenses like the insurance. Obviously, the shipper can also reduce the cost of product packing.

Transporting goods by container helps to reduce transportation costs, contributes to the modernization of material and technical facilities, increases labor productivity, and improves the quality of the transportation industry.

Disadvantages of Container Shipping

The expense of maintaining containers used for importing and exporting commodities is expensive, the volume of the shell is relatively large, the aluminum shell is easily scratched.

Some large, overloaded items cannot be transported by containers; they must be transported by other means.

The cost of facilities is quite expensive

Goods are recommended for Container Transporting

+ Goods with relatively large volume (such as several tens of tons), which can be packed with one or more containers

+ Import and export goods: Most import and export goods are suitable for transporting container goods by sea. These products include Vietnamese staples such as rice, pepper, coffee, cashew, etc. To high-tech products such as machinery, equipment, electronics, etc.

Goods are suitable for carried by containers

Products cannot be carried by container shipping

+ The shipments of great value, need to be transported quickly such as: jewelry, fresh flowers, .. these items should be transported by air with high cost but fast and safe.

+ Consignments with large volume (from several tens of thousands of tons or more) such as rice, lime, fertilizer, ore, etc. This item is suitable for transportation by bulk carriers, smaller in size will be suitable for transportation.

+ Specialized containers are still able to carry small-volume goods like automobiles, petroleum gas, and other products that must be transported by specialized ships.

Process of Shipping by Container

You should take the following steps if you decide to ship items in containers:

Step 1: Contact the shipping company to select a vessel for the freight schedule There are numerous carriers to select from, and the majority of trains run at a scheduled frequency, at least once every week.

Step 2: Inquire about shipping fees and associated costs; you must be awar.e of them because they may be substantially higher than maritime freight.

Step 3: Provide the shipping company with the relevant details, such as the name of the goods, the number of containers, the port of departure and destination, the anticipated journey, etc. You will receive the cargo hold agreement from them.

Step 4: Place the items into the container and deliver them to the port.

Step 5: Customs clearance

You can hire a freight forwarder or broker for convenience in hiring ships and transporting goods

In the last 65 years, the ubiquitous shipping container has evolved from being just a dumb box to being a smart container capable of being tracked anywhere in the world, in some cases even to the bottom of the ocean and comes in different sizes and types..

Since the numbers above has been indicated in TEUs, here is a simple explanation of what a TEU is and why is it calculated in TEUs..

The most common container lengths used currently are 20′ (20 foot) and 40′ (40 foot).. Since 20′ containers are the lowest common denominator and easier to calculate in relation to capacities and volume, the term TEU (which stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) has become an industry standard reference..

The container ships that carry these containers are designed and calibrated in terms of TEUs and the carrying capacity of a container ship is defined in terms of TEUs..

Since TEU refers to a 20′, naturally a 40′ container is considered as 2 TEUs because a 40′ is twice the length of a 20′..

Whether owned or leased, collectively, the containers owned and leased by shipping lines are called “carrier owned container (COC in short)” or line owned container.. The term COC is not used much as in majority of the cases, the container used by the customer is the carrier owned container..

Although not included in the list of core carriers, a VOCC (Vessel Operating Common Carrier – also known as Shipping Line) or an NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) are also classified as carriers who also own/lease containers..

There is another layer of containers that are also in operation across the globe and that is a “shipper owned container“.. As the name suggests, when a container is owned by the shipper, it is termed as a Shipper Owned Container (SOC in short)..

The difference in definition between the two needs to be looked at a bit deeper..

Why on earth would a shipper want to own a container..??

So why would a shipper want to own a container when seemingly the carriers have plenty of containers and also considering that a 20′ container can cost anything between $ 3000-4000 and a 40′ container can cost anything between $ 6000-8000..??

There are several reasons for that and it is also important to consider who the shipper is.. For a carrier, a BCO (Beneficial Cargo Owner – in other words a direct exporter), a Freight Forwarder or an NVOCC may be a shipper..

Usually in such remote projects, the receiver may not have the space or facilities to store the cargo and may use the container as a storage location..

If the shipper uses a carrier owned container, the line will need to charge the receiver demurrage or detention for keeping the container more than the allowed free time..

In a lot of cases where the shipper/receiver know that the cargo may need to be stored for a longer period, they may find it cheaper to rather buy a container, pack it and ship their cargo than use the carrier’s own container and pay for demurrage and detention..

Apart from this, in a lot of projects, after unpacking, a container could be transformed into a site office or living quarters for some of the on-site staff..

However, as far as the main carrier is concerned, a container owned by an NVOCC is still a “shipper owned container” for them, because for a carrier, any container that does not form part of their owned, operated or leased fleet is considered to be a shipper owned container..

Which customers will use a shipper owned container..??

As mentioned above, a lot of SOCs are used by project management and project logistics service providers or big engineering firms who used these containers..

However, COVID-19, its impact on global trade and the resultant port congestion, space crunch that all customers are currently facing have forced some of the big BCOs and freight forwarders to buy their own containers and charter their own ships..

It has been widely reported that BCOs like Walmart, Home Depot have chartered ships to handle their own shipments instead of having to depend on the shipping lines and avoid exorbitant shipping freight rates..

Ikea recently became the latest BCO to confirm that it will also start to ship its own goods on its own containers using chartered vessels..

How would one identify a shipper owned container..??

Are there differences in the markings on a container whether it is a shipper owned container or a carrier owned container..??

A carrier owned container will have all ISO and BIC related markings as shown in below image.. A shipper may buy their container from either a carrier, a container conversion company, or a leasing company..

If a shipper buys a container from a carrier, a shipper is expected to replace the decals of the original container especially the container number (prefix – from HLXU to NONE and check digit – from 9 to 6) as shown in below example..

This change is mandatory because the ownership of the container has changed and it therefore cannot have the same container number and logo as the original owner.. The carrier will also deregister it from their fleet..

So if you are looking to buy a container or ship a shipper owned container, remember above..

Conclusion

With all the container shipping lines hard pressed for space and equipment, and no immediate solution in sight for the current crunch with predictions for the end of this capacity crunch ranging from 1st quarter of 2022 to half year of 2022, it is very likely that more and more shippers will go the route of Walmart, Home Depot and Ikea in chartering ships and operating SOCs or even piggy back on these BCOs..

There may be times when these customers may have to use the shipping services of the incumbent carriers to ship their containers which will then be classified as shipper owned containers.. It is understood that some shipping lines are encouraging shipper owned containers currently as they run out of inventory which may be stuck in various countries around the world.

Perishable cargo may be defined as goods that can deteriorate if not stored or transported under ideal circumstances or if exposed to adverse temperature, humidity and other environmental conditions..

Examples of perishable cargo are Fruits, Vegetables, Meat, Dairy etc..

Perishable cargoes are shipped in Reefer Containers (refrigerated containers) which are specialised containers that have been made for the purpose of carriage of perishable cargo..

Reefer containers have an operating range between -30°C to +30°C (-22°F-86°F) and are designed to maintain these temperatures, irrespective of the outside temperatures..

In this day and age, the superior technology in the reefer containers allow for the perishable cargo to stay fresh for longer and be delivered at the best quality to the destination..

But reefer containers could also pose a big problem in terms of cargo damages and cargo claims due to various factors. This places greater attention on the correct and proper packing, handling and monitoring of both the perishable cargo and the reefer container..

As per CHUBB, the majority of insurance claims they have received for perishable cargo have been found to be due to these 3 main issues:

Confusion over Celsius and Fahrenheit

Poor communication of the shipping requirements

Failure to monitor or plug in the cargo transport unit throughout its journey

While these are seemingly simple errors, such simple errors could lead to some of the most expensive claims..

Here are a few precautions that you can take to avoid problems in shipping perishable cargo in a reefer container whether you are a shipper or a carrier..

As a shipper

1) It is your prime responsibility to ensure that the specific instructions and requirements for the packing and transportation of your cargo is communicated to everyone involved in the shipment of your cargo..

If you have any doubt on the correct methods, you should refer to the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code)..

2) If you are using a LSP (Logistics Services Provider) like a freight forwarder to manage your entire cargo movement process, you need to make sure that your LSP has a sound and detailed understanding of your product, its specific requirements in terms of packing, storage, temperature, and most importantly the specific problems related to this product.

3) Shippers need to be aware of specific requirements at the destination country because for some cargoes, temperatures are prescribed by the country receiving the goods. Such intricate details must be handled correctly and also advised to the carrier before the shipment commences.

4) When communicating requirements such as set temperature etc to the service providers, it may be prudent to use full forms or words instead of abbreviations or symbols.

For example, set temperature can be written as Minus 5 Deg Celsius instead of -5 Deg C..These days most of the instructions may be sent from a computer or a phone and if you look at the QWERTY keyboard closely, C for Celsius and F for Fahrenheit are literally one above the other which is too close for comfort and a mistake in typing could quite literally upset the apple cart for you..

5) Check that the container that you receive from the carrier is in the best condition for your product.. Make sure below critical areas are checked before packing

Container has been pre-cooled to the required temperature;

It is in a clean and good condition free of odor and damages (both inside and out);

The door gasket closes and seals correctly and that the container’s floor and grooves are clean and unobstructed;

The temperature, humidity and vent settings that you require have been adhered to;

Damage to the internal vents can affect the efficiency of air flow through the reefer container which in turn can result in the container failing to reach the set point temperature..

6) Ensure that you know ALL the characteristics of your product such as:

What type of perishable is it;

How it must be packaged;

How it must be shipped – as fresh, chilled or frozen;

What issues could affect the condition of the goods (condensation etc)

7) Discuss with your logistics provider on their contingency plan such as alternative route or transport mode in case of any emergencies..

8) Understand airflow and cargo stowage methods and how the packing needs to be done for Fresh, Chilled and Frozen cargoes.. If you have a doubt about this, you can seek the assistance from the carrier that you are using..

9) Use a reliable reefer cargo service provider to monitor the packing, movement and shipment of your perishable cargo.

Even after all above precautions if something does go wrong in the transportation of perishable cargo in reefer containers, the important point to remember is that time is of the essence and a remedial solution needs to be sought immediately..

One of these solutions could be the appointment of a perishable cargo expert to assess the damage to the cargo.. Early intervention may assist dramatically in mitigating your loss and assist in at least a portion of the cargo being either accepted or saved..

There are also specialist service providers who are able to perform micro-biological analysis on the perishable cargo to determine whether or not it is safe for consumption..

What precautions do you take when shipping your perishable cargo in reefer containers..??

Voyage charter Party is an extremely important document in sea freight when businesses want to hire a shipping line, in which the carrier undertakes to carry the goods from one port to deliver the goods to the consignee at another port, and the charterer undertakes to pay the freight. Let’s learn about the Voyage charter Party and the regulations of this.

What is the Voyage Charter Party

A voyage charter party (C/P) is a legal agreement that commits the ship owner or carrier to transport goods from one port to another port and deliver them to the consignee. The charterer commits to pay the freight at the price that both parties have agreed upon. C/P is signed when the charterer has a large volume of cargo to be transported such as: petroleum, coal, ore, grain, cement, fertilizer, iron, steel, etc.

C/P in sea freight

Chartering is challenging, as a result, charterers frequently entrust chartering to brokers, which are forwarder firms and agents of shipping lines. Normally, C/P is prepared in accordance with the forms offered by some marine organizations, such as Gencon, Centracon, Baltime, etc.

Contents of the Voyage Charter Party (C/P)

The parties

Shipping line: the shipping line with the ship owner can be one, or if the shipping line does not have a ship, they hire the ship owner’s ship to do transport business for 10 years, 20 years,…

Charterer: The charterer can be an exporter or an importer.

Broker: freight broker.

Regulation on loading time

. However, the charterer tends to insist that the ship arrive on time, and the shipping company prefers that the ship arrive at the port for loading at a more flexible time.

In some cases, the charterer needs to send the goods urgently / very urgently and the ship is ready, the two parties can make a special agreement such as:

Prompt: the ship will arrive at the port of loading in a few days after signing the contract.

Promptismo: the ship will arrive at the port of loading on the day of signing the contract.

Spot prompt: the ship will arrive at the loading port a few hours after signing the contract.

Under some regulations, the charterer is not compelled to deliver the commodities if the vessel arrives before the designated loading time. If the charterer begins to deliver the goods at the early arrival of the ship. Then the delivery time will start to be counted. If the ship arrives and has no goods to deliver, the number of days the ship has to wait will be counted in the delivery time.

Some shippers will agree on a contract cancellation date and reserve the right to do so in order to safeguard their interests if the ship does not arrive to load on that day due to the fact that the cost of port storage falls on the owner of the goods. In fact, shippers really need ships, so they will be flexible to negotiate on a case-by-case basis.

Regulation on port of loading/port of discharge

Depending on the purpose of risk reduction, the type of vessel (ship’s tonnage), loading/unloading practices of the shipping line, topography, channels and facilities of the port system of the exporting/importing country. The two parties will agree that the port of loading / unloading port is a port to determine the cluster can be one of the ports in the specified port cluster.

If the regulation is a single port, both parties write loading port (name of loading port) and discharging port (name of unloading port).

If the regulation is a cluster of loading / unloading ports, the two sides write: range of loading port (name of loading port cluster) and range of discharging port (name of unloading port cluster).

Ship Port

The failure to specify the exact name of the port of loading or unloading and instead simply identifying the port area or cluster will put both parties at risk owing to the extra expenses (inland transportation costs for shippers or transportation costs) as a result of the exact location of the loading and unloading port outside of the plan.

Regulation on goods

The names of the goods, the kind of packaging, and the qualities must all be expressly stated by the two parties. Shipper sending two different sorts of commodities on the same boat should pay attention to note or avoid disputes later.

Depending on the features of the product, you can hire a shipping line to carry the quantity of products either by weight or volume. In most cases, it is uncommon to provide an exact quantity of goods transported. The charterer is responsible for loading the full amount of the notified cargo. If the delivery and loading on board is less than the specified quantity, the carrier will collect dead freight. Conversely, if the carrier does not receive the full quantity, the charterer is entitled to claim compensation for costs related to the abandonment of the cargo by the ship.

Regulation on freight charges and payment

Currently, there are two ways to calculate the fee as follows:

Carry as much as you can (in the case that ships are not fully loaded with cargo); the number of charge bases may correspond to the amount at either the port of departure or the port of arrival. However, applying the quantity at the port of destination will incur an additional cost of re-weighing/counting the goods, so the contract will usually state: “The quantity of the charge basis is the quantity at the port of departure. The charterer must pay an additional 2% of the total freight as a compensation for the shipping line not re-weighing the cargo.”

In case of full lumpsum subscription: the freight is charged once for the whole ship, as long as the quantity is within the allowable tonnage of the ship.

There are 2 ways to pay the fee/payment time:

Prepaid = paid at port of loading = Freight Prepaid usually used in the case of the seller chartering the ship. Shipping lines want to minimize risk, so they ask the seller to pay the charter price first before shipping the goods. The seller must complete the payment of freight, the new shipping line will ship the goods and issue the original bill of lading.

Postpaid = pay at port of discharge = Freight Collect usually applied in the case of the buyer chartering a ship. The shipping company still has control over the goods, so the charterer can owe the freight until the goods arrive at the destination. Prior to the shipping firm releasing the goods, the purchaser must complete the freight payment.

In road freight, there is no shipping document, but instead using documents such as cargo receipt, FCR delivery document, etc. as cargo record without the value of ownership of the goods.

B/L

What documents are required for sea transportation?

What documents do ocean freight need? The main types of shipping documents include:

Documents with port & ship

In sea freight, the freight forwarder/receiver needs to pay attention to the documents to control the goods closely during the loading stage, specifically:

Bill of lading: A document for transporting goods by sea issued by the carrier or his representative to the consignor after the goods have been loaded on board the vessel or after receiving the goods for loading. The bill of lading acts as proof of the transaction of goods, a proof of the contract of carriage.

Cargo manifest: A list of goods arranged on board a ship for transport to other ports made by the agent at the port of loading. The manifest must be prepared immediately after loading the goods, it can also be prepared when preparing to sign the bill of lading, provided that it is completed before the procedures for the ship leave the port.

First mate’s receipt: A statement provided to the consignor or owner of the goods by the mate in charge of shipping confirming the ship has received the goods.

Tally Sheet: As an original document of the number of goods loaded on board, a copy of this form will be given to the first mate in charge of cargo for keeping, it is also necessary for claims of subsequent loss of goods.

Loading chart: A drawing depicting the arrangement of goods on a ship, including different symbols to mark each different item, delivered to each different port.

Loading Instruction of the Shipping Company: An instruction from the shipper to the shipping company and the port authority, to provide sufficient information about the goods to be sent to the port for loading on the ship according to the instructions.

Customs Documents in Sea Freight

A customs document is the first required when exporting or importing goods. It is essential, especially for cargo transported overseas. According to Customs regulations, documents that goods owners must present when goods move across countries, including:

1 original copy of the Ministry of Commerce export permission paperwork

1 copy of the foreign trade agreement: A written agreement on the acquisition and purchase of goods between a buyer and a seller in two separate nations is known as an international trade contract.

1 certificate of company registration and business code registration document: A business registration certificate is a record of the first date a company was registered, and it serves as the foundation for confirming that the company is operating legally. The national information system on business registration generates a string of digits known as a certificate of registration of enterprise code. Each company only has one distinct code that cannot be used by others

2 originals of the export customs declaration: Before goods are exported or imported across the country’s borders, the goods owner or the owner of the transportation must present the customs declaration.

2 Original Detailed Goods Declaration: This document provides detailed information on the items contained in the package to facilitate the process of inspecting the goods. When the shipment contains a variety of different commodities with various names, it also has the effect of complementing the invoice.
