• LCL/LCL: is the carrier who receives odd shipments from the sender at  container freight station (CFS), packed into one or more containers, transported to CFS at destination and delivered to multiple consignees.

Why on earth would a shipper want to own a container..??

So why would a shipper want to own a container when seemingly the carriers have plenty of containers and also considering that a 20′ container can cost anything between $ 3000-4000 and a 40′ container can cost anything between $ 6000-8000..??

There are several reasons for that and it is also important to consider who the shipper is.. For a carrier, a BCO (Beneficial Cargo Owner – in other words a direct exporter), a Freight Forwarder or an NVOCC may be a shipper..

Usually in such remote projects, the receiver may not have the space or facilities to store the cargo and may use the container as a storage location..

If the shipper uses a carrier owned container, the line will need to charge the receiver demurrage or detention for keeping the container more than the allowed free time..

In a lot of cases where the shipper/receiver know that the cargo may need to be stored for a longer period, they may find it cheaper to rather buy a container, pack it and ship their cargo than use the carrier’s own container and pay for demurrage and detention..

Ikea recently became the latest BCO to confirm that it will also start to ship its own goods on its own containers using chartered vessels..

How would one identify a shipper owned container..??

A carrier owned container will have all ISO and BIC related markings as shown in below image.. A shipper may buy their container from either a carrier, a container conversion company, or a leasing company..

If a shipper buys a container from a carrier, a shipper is expected to replace the decals of the original container especially the container number (prefix – from HLXU to NONE and check digit – from 9 to 6) as shown in below example..

This change is mandatory because the ownership of the container has changed and it therefore cannot have the same container number and logo as the original owner.. The carrier will also deregister it from their fleet..

Reefer containers have an operating range between -30°C to +30°C (-22°F-86°F) and are designed to maintain these temperatures, irrespective of the outside temperatures..

In this day and age, the superior technology in the reefer containers allow for the perishable cargo to stay fresh for longer and be delivered at the best quality to the destination..

But reefer containers could also pose a big problem in terms of cargo damages and cargo claims due to various factors. This places greater attention on the correct and proper packing, handling and monitoring of both the perishable cargo and the reefer container..

3) Shippers need to be aware of specific requirements at the destination country because for some cargoes, temperatures are prescribed by the country receiving the goods. Such intricate details must be handled correctly and also advised to the carrier before the shipment commences.

4) When communicating requirements such as set temperature etc to the service providers, it may be prudent to use full forms or words instead of abbreviations or symbols.

For example, set temperature can be written as Minus 5 Deg Celsius instead of -5 Deg C..These days most of the instructions may be sent from a computer or a phone and if you look at the QWERTY keyboard closely, C for Celsius and F for Fahrenheit are literally one above the other which is too close for comfort and a mistake in typing could quite literally upset the apple cart for you..

5) Check that the container that you receive from the carrier is in the best condition for your product.. Make sure below critical areas are checked before packing

• Container has been pre-cooled to the required temperature;
• It is in a clean and good condition free of odor and damages (both inside and out);
• The door gasket closes and seals correctly and that the container’s floor and grooves are clean and unobstructed;
• The temperature, humidity and vent settings that you require have been adhered to;
• Damage to the internal vents can affect the efficiency of air flow through the reefer container which in turn can result in the container failing to reach the set point temperature..

6) Ensure that you know ALL the characteristics of your product such as:

• What type of perishable is it;
• How it must be packaged;
• How it must be shipped – as fresh, chilled or frozen;
• What issues could affect the condition of the goods (condensation etc)

7) Discuss with your logistics provider on their contingency plan such as alternative route or transport mode in case of any emergencies..

8) Understand airflow and cargo stowage methods and how the packing needs to be done for Fresh, Chilled and Frozen cargoes.. If you have a doubt about this, you can seek the assistance from the carrier that you are using..

What is the Voyage Charter Party

A voyage charter party (C/P) is a legal agreement that commits the ship owner or carrier to transport goods from one port to another port and deliver them to the consignee. The charterer commits to pay the freight at the price that both parties have agreed upon. C/P is signed when the charterer has a large volume of cargo to be transported such as: petroleum, coal, ore, grain, cement, fertilizer, iron, steel, etc.

Chartering is challenging, as a result, charterers frequently entrust chartering to brokers, which are forwarder firms and agents of shipping lines. Normally, C/P is prepared in accordance with the forms offered by some marine organizations, such as Gencon, Centracon, Baltime, etc.

Contents of the Voyage Charter Party (C/P)

Regulation on port of loading/port of discharge

However, applying the quantity at the port of destination will incur an additional cost of re-weighing/counting the goods, so the contract will usually state: “The quantity of the charge basis is the quantity at the port of departure. The charterer must pay an additional 2% of the total freight as a compensation for the shipping line not re-weighing the cargo.”
• In case of full lumpsum subscription: the freight is charged once for the whole ship, as long as the quantity is within the allowable tonnage of the ship.

There are 2 ways to pay the fee/payment time:

• Prepaid = paid at port of loading = Freight Prepaid usually used in the case of the seller chartering the ship. Shipping lines want to minimize risk, so they ask the seller to pay the charter price first before shipping the goods. The seller must complete the payment of freight, the new shipping line will ship the goods and issue the original bill of lading.
• Postpaid = pay at port of discharge = Freight Collect usually applied in the case of the buyer chartering a ship. The shipping company still has control over the goods, so the charterer can owe the freight until the goods arrive at the destination. Prior to the shipping firm releasing the goods, the purchaser must complete the freight payment.

Documents with port & ship

In sea freight, the freight forwarder/receiver needs to pay attention to the documents to control the goods closely during the loading stage, specifically:

• Bill of lading: A document for transporting goods by sea issued by the carrier or his representative to the consignor after the goods have been loaded on board the vessel or after receiving the goods for loading. The bill of lading acts as proof of the transaction of goods, a proof of the contract of carriage.

The manifest must be prepared immediately after loading the goods, it can also be prepared when preparing to sign the bill of lading, provided that it is completed before the procedures for the ship leave the port.
• First mate’s receipt: A statement provided to the consignor or owner of the goods by the mate in charge of shipping confirming the ship has received the goods.
• Tally Sheet: As an original document of the number of goods loaded on board, a copy of this form will be given to the first mate in charge of cargo for keeping, it is also necessary for claims of subsequent loss of goods.

• Loading chart: A drawing depicting the arrangement of goods on a ship, including different symbols to mark each different item, delivered to each different port.
• Loading Instruction of the Shipping Company: An instruction from the shipper to the shipping company and the port authority, to provide sufficient information about the goods to be sent to the port for loading on the ship according to the instructions.

A customs document is the first required when exporting or importing goods. It is essential, especially for cargo transported overseas. According to Customs regulations, documents that goods owners must present when goods move across countries, including:

• 1 original copy of the Ministry of Commerce export permission paperwork
• 1 copy of the foreign trade agreement:  A written agreement on the acquisition and purchase of goods between a buyer and a seller in two separate nations is known as an international trade contract.
• 1 certificate of company registration and business code registration document: A business registration certificate is a record of the first date a company was registered, and it serves as the foundation for confirming that the company is operating legally. The national information system on business registration generates a string of digits known as a certificate of registration of enterprise code. Each company only has one distinct code that cannot be used by others
• 2 originals of the export customs declaration: Before goods are exported or imported across the country’s borders, the goods owner or the owner of the transportation must present the customs declaration.
• 2 Original Detailed Goods Declaration: This document provides detailed information on the items contained in the package to facilitate the process of inspecting the goods. When the shipment contains a variety of different commodities with various names, it also has the effect of complementing the invoice.

In addition to documents for customs presentation and transactions with ports and ships, there are other types of documents on goods, insurance, payment, etc., specifically:

• Certificate of Origin: A document providing information about the place of manufacture of the goods, certified by a person of the competent authority of that country.
• Commercial invoice: A straightforward form of payment created by the seller that requires the buyer to pay the precise amount shown on the invoice. Commercial invoice clearly expressing the terms of the delivery facility, the unit price, the total value, and the details of the commodities.
• Packing slip: A declaration of all goods contained in a package (box). Packing slips are usually placed in packages or bags attached to the outside so that they can be easily found by the buyer.The goods packing slip contains the following information: the number and date of the invoice; the names and addresses of the seller and the buyer; the loading and unloading port; the name of the vessel; the trip number; and cargo details like amount, number of packages, weight, and volume.
• Quantity/weight certificate: A record that the exporter prepares and provides to the importer in order to specify the precise quantity and weight of delivered goods.
• Insurance document: The insurance document is the certification issued by the insurance agency to the import and export units to confirm that the goods have been insured.

Ever Ace (23,992 TEUs)

Ever Ace This is the world’s largest container ship belonging to the Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Line, which was put into operation in July.

With a capacity of up to 21,718 TEU, Ever Ace made its maiden voyage from China to the port of Hamburg in August. The global record for container shipping has been set as a result. Ever Aim and Ever Act, its sister ships, have already started operating. Additionally, the building of Ever Arm, Ever Alp, and Ever Art is currently underway, with the delivery of those vessels to Evergreen’s fleet anticipated for 2022.

HMM Algeciras (23,964 TEUs)

HMM AlgecirasHMM Algeciras belongs to the Korean carrier HMM and is built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Corporation (DSME). This ship was completed in April last year. After a month, this ship, which could carry up to 19,621 TEU, sailed on its first trip from China to Europe and made a port call in Rotterdam.

HMM Algeciras is the first in a series of large ships of the same capacity including HMM Copenhagen, HMM Dublin, HMM Gdansk, HMM Hamburg, HMM Le Havre and HMM Helsinki.

HMM Oslo (23,820 TEUs)

HMM Oslo, along with its sibling ships HMM Rotterdam, HMM Stockholm, HMM Southampton and HMM St Petersburg, are part of the container ships in a series of 12 Algeciras vessels, which differ only in their capacity of 144 ΤEU. They are built by SHI and will be added to HMM’s fleet in 2020.

With a capacity of 19,529 TEU, HMM St. Petersburg, the final of HMM’s 12 24,000 TEU container ships, set sail for Europe in September 2020 from Yantian port (China). In order to comply with the new IMO 2020 environmental requirements, all of the HMM ships mentioned above—including those with high-efficiency engines and improved hull designs—are outfitted with dust filtering devices.

MSC Gulsun (23.756 TEUs)

The MSC Gulsun is the first of several ships in the Gulsun family, all of which were built in 2019 at the SHI shipyard. In August of last year, this ship made her maiden voyage to Europe. It can transport 23,756 TEU, which is comparable to the carrying capacities of the MSC Samar, MSC Mia, MSC Febe, MSC Leni, and MSC Ambra.

The Gulsun family also includes ten additional container ships with a capacity of under 100 TEUs that were constructed at DSME, such as MSC Mina, MSC Isabella, MSC Arina, and MSC Sixin. Additionally, the MSC Michelle, MSC Nela, MSC Apolline, and MSC Amelia each have a capacity of 23,782 TEUs, while the MSC Diletta and MSC Allegra have a maximum capacity of 23,936 TEUs (according to MSC data).

The ships in the 23,000 TEU class are equipped with a variety of eco-friendly features, such as an IMO-approved hybrid exhaust cleaning system to reduce CO2 emissions, the use of low-sulfur fuel, or future adaptation to liquefied natural gas (LNG).

CMA CGM Jacques Saadé (23,112 TEUs)

This is the first 23,000 TEU class container ship in history to be powered by liquefied natural gas, was built in July 2018 at China State Shipbuilding Company (CSSC) in Shanghai and has been put into operation 2 years later. In September 2020, this ship joined the French Asia Line 1 (FAL1) transport route – one of the longest sea routes in the world connecting Asia with Northern Europe.
